2000 EDITION: XIV Solidarity Prize awarded to the BAYT-Al-THAGAFA
association, and the Honorary Prize for Work in the Mass Media
awarded to Anna Tortajada and Mònica Bernabe
IDHC awarded BAYT-Al-THAGAFA, an association
directed by Sister Teresa Losada, with the XIV Premi
Solidaritat. The objective of this association is
the cultural and social integration of immigrant Arab women
in Catalunya.
IDHC wanted to recognize the fundamental work of this association
for our society.
The Third Honorary Prize for Work in the Mass Media
was awarded to the journalists Anna Tortajada and
Mònica Bernabe. They went to Afghanistan,
dressed in a burka, to experienced how common Afghanistani
women live. Here, the journalists discovered how Afghanistani
women and their daughters still live under a regime of terror
and cruelty.
The ceremony took place in the Catalonian Parliament, in
the “Passos Perduts” room, on the 20th Februrary,
2000. Joan Rigol I Roig, president of the Parliament, and
José Manuel Bandrés, honorific president of
the Institut de Drets Humans de Catalunya presided the act.
The act consisted of an assembly with the Presidents and
the prizewinners. A work of art, donated by the painter Paula
Leiva, was presented as recognition. At the end,
the Vivaldi Cor Choir played a concert of choral songs.
